Does Medicare Cover Vision, Dental, and Hearing? Here's the Breakdown
Medicare covers most major medical needs for those 65 and older. However, some services – including vision, dental and hearing – fall outside the program’s scope.

- Original Medicare does not offer vision, dental, and hearing coverage. Essentially, unless your dental or vision issue is life-threatening or requires an emergency procedure, Original Medicare will not cover it. Hearing exams, hearing aids, and virtually all auditory services are not covered either.
- Some, but not all, Medicare Supplement plans offer discounts for select vision, dental, and hearing services.
- Virtually all Medicare Advantage plans have extra vision, dental, and hearing benefits. Most Medicare Managed Care Plans – also known as Medicare Advantage plans – offer coverage of some dental, vision, and hearing services. The extent of coverage varies from plan to plan – for example, a plan may limit its coverage to one kind of hearing aid or require your dentist to be part of its network.
These gaps in Medicare coverage often leave people searching for additional benefits to meet their unique healthcare needs.
Ancillary plans allow you to purchase extra coverage.
Ancillary plans are standalone plans available on the private insurance market. This means they are open to anyone looking for the specific kind of policies they offer. Coverage can range from vision, hearing, and dental care to cancer, stroke, and room-and-board. Plans are generally inexpensive and coverage if often extensive.
Add coverage any time during the year.
No special enrollment period is required to purchase an ancillary plan. You can add coverage when you sign up for Medicare or as your healthcare needs evolve. As is often the case with health insurance, ancillary plans may have pre-existing conditions exclusions or require you to be on the plan for a certain amount of time before qualifying for coverage. Some plans are only available in certain states. It’s important to understand the specifics of any plan you are considering.
Now is a good time to review your plan benefits.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment runs through March 31, 2025. If you are already enrolled in a Medicare Managed Care Plan (Medicare Advantage Plan), you can make a one-time change during this period. This includes:
- Switching to a different Medicare Advantage plan
- Dropping your Medicare Advantage plan and switching to a Medicare Supplement (Medi-Gap) Insurance plan and Part D stand-alone prescription drug coverage.
Review your current plan and make sure you are happy with the additional benefits it offers. If not, now is the time to evaluate other options. Any changes you make will be in effect for the rest of the year.
